Translator, English

Purpose of the Job 

The English Translator is responsible for translating EHRC’s written materials from Amharic languages into English and from English into Amharic languages. The role ensures that all translated content is accurate, culturally appropriate, and consistent with institutional terminology and communication standards. The translator also manages media relations, preparing press materials, organizing interviews and events, and monitoring media coverage related to the Commission’s work.

Key Responsibilities 

• Translate EHRC official document, press releases, articles, reports, correspondence and other human rights content into and from English, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
• Draft and edit articles and press releases in both Amharic and English and vice versa.
• Maintain and update the commission’s website and social media with translated content to ensure accessibility and inclusiveness.
• Liaise with local and international media representatives to promote accurate reporting on human rights issues.
• Coordinate with subject-matter experts to clarify technical, legal, or policy terminology.
• Support multilingual publication and clearance processes.
• Maintain updated terminology glossaries and reference materials.
• Monitor current affairs and EHRC-related media coverage, translating key content for internal reporting and public dissemination.
• Prepare and translate media kits, case stories, and other informational materials for journalists.
• Distribute press releases and promotional materials to media mailing lists in appropriate languages.
• Create and circulate bilingual or multilingual press reviews summarizing EHRC’s media presence and visibility. 
• Support in the monitoring, translation, and summarization of local media coverage on human rights issues for internal use and public communication.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
